Religion is a tricky question here. We do not have the space here to cover Bhakti yoga, the Dervishes and such; and I don't have the authority. But, I cannot neglect the obligation to mention it, as I feel that I owe it much for my dance. Religion is not necessary to ecstatic dance. I'm sure many dancers never give it a thought. For me, whenever I dance in public, I feel that I am witnessing for my religion. My dance is a gift and I owe that homage. It also helps me keep my ego in check.
Certainly, as you dig deeper into Ecstatic Dance, you may want to research different religions' dances.
I plan to add more information on this subject later.
